Associations Boost America’s Economy and Generate Opportunity

In a new study, ASAE (American Society of Association Executives) unveils the most comprehensive research to date on the economic contributions of associations across the United States.

Conducted in partnership with Oxford Economics, the world's foremost independent economic advisory firm, this study highlights the significant role associations play in driving economic growth, supporting job creation and contributing to government revenue.

A Closer Look at the Economic Power of Associations

The study encompasses data from 20,000 associations and captures the economic impact of the sector. Key findings include:

Job Creation and Wages: Associations are a cornerstone of the American job market, directly supporting 1 million jobs and contributing $71.4 billion in wages across all 50 states.

Economic Contributions of Events: Beyond direct employment, associations drive significant economic activity through events. Each year, more than 272,000 association-led events attract nearly 52 million participants, directly supporting 342,000 jobs and generating $42 billion in spending. These events create a ripple effect, benefiting a diverse range of local businesses and injecting revenue into state and local economies.

Tax Revenue Generation: Associations support public services through tax contributions. Annually, associations support nearly $28 billion in federal, state and local taxes. Events organized by these associations generate an extra $7.5 billion in tax revenue for state and local governments, helping fund essential services such as infrastructure, education and public safety.

A Resource for Policymakers and Leaders

These findings are a vital resource for policymakers, business leaders and the public. The insights offer a data-driven understanding of association contributions—serving as a foundation for advocacy to enhance the power and performance of the association and nonprofit community.

“ASAE is the authoritative voice on association research, providing reliable data and insights that policymakers, business leaders, and the public trust,” ASAE President and CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE added. “This study underscores our commitment to advancing understanding of the incredible contributions associations make to our country.”
